In the realm of psychological suspense, Thomas Harris stands alone. Exploring both the nature of human evil and the nerve-racking anatomy of a forensic investigation, Harris unleashes a frightening vision of the dark side of our well-lighted world. In this extraordinary novel, which preceded The Silence of the Lambs and Hannibal, Harris introduced the unforgettable character Dr. Hannibal Lecter. And in it, Will Graham — the FBI man who hunted Lecter down — risks his sanity and his life to duel a killer called the … RED DRAGON
Ready for Halloween I figured I would get started on this book, it is an absolutely terrifying book that will keep you hooked all the way through.
Hannibal Lecter is quite a well known character, this is the book in which you meet him. This book is terrifying because it doesn’t rely on gore or paranormal things, it is simply how one human can act after undergoing years of abuse. It is terrifying to think that this can actually happen, people can sometimes just snap and become criminally insane.
If you have seen the Red Dragon movie but haven’t read the novel the two are pretty similar, obviously the book goes into slightly more detail with some added horrific parts however other than this the two are quite similar. However I would definitely recommend this read, it is disturbing but creepily realistic, I love it!
It is an absolute masterpiece, I can’t go into too much detail without ending up spoiling some part of the plot for you and I feel like you have to go into this blind and follow the story Harris wants you to. Although nowadays the machinery and methods may look slightly out of date (VHS tapes for example) it is still amazing, you get to follow the in depth methods which FBI analysts use to try and catch killers, it is not so simple as just finding a fingerprint, the killer magically already being in the database and you find him. This story makes it so much harder because the killer leaves no prints, therefore it makes the job of the police harder and makes the story more interesting.
Many thriller books nowadays are all about the killer killing people which yeah is why we read the books but there’s no story, I want to know WHY they are killing people and how the police will catch them, this book gives you that, you find out about the killer’s past and what made them become the killer they are today. It gives you a deep insight that you just don’t see anymore in books, it doesn’t rely on things being left out due to memory lapses or anything like that, you literally follow the investigation along with the police who try their best to do everything they can to save him. What is scarier than that? The police doing their utter best and using all their resources to catch a killer and they still cannot catch him.
I liked the twists in this book and even though if you’ve watched the film that does not mean that the book ends the same way (without giving away too much). Therefore even though I’ve seen the film countless times I still loved that at the end of the book I didn’t know what would happen and was on the edge of my seat pretty much the entire way through!
I would definitely recommend this book, although it is on the hefty side of over 400 pages it is worth it! The amount of gruesome detail that Harris writes is definitely worth the read. If you’re a fan of thrillers this is definitely the book for you!
Summing up: A chilling thriller!
